FODMAPS Elimination Diet

We have completed 1 week of the elimination diet and tootsie is feeling really good.  She has had very little gas, no issues with constipation, and has a healthy appetite.  Her mood and sleep have been great as well.

These are food ingredients/additives that must be AVOIDED during the elimination phase:
Bulgar Wheat, Brown Sugar, Crystalline Fructose, Coconut Milk, Dry Milk Solids, Fructo-oligosaccharides/FOS, Fructose, Fructose Solids, Fruit-juice concentrates, Goat's milk, High-fructose corn syrup, Honey, Hydrogenated starch hydrolysates, Inulin, Isomalt, Kamut, Lactitol, Maltitol, Mannitol, Miso, Modified starch, Molasses, Polydextrose, Sorbitol, Soy Protein Isolate, Spelt, Sprouted Wheat, Texturized Vegetable Protein, Tomato Paste, Wheat Berries, Wheat Flour (white, whole wheat, all purpose), Whey Protein Concentrate, Xylitol

She is eating Udi's White Sandwich Bread - about 3 slices per day.  It is made with brown rice flour.  I had read that brown rice is a fructan and should be avoided on many sites, but our dietician said it is not an avoided food on the elimination diet.  So far Tootsie is doing really well with it.  It tastes great toasted.

A snack that we have recently discovered is Corn Thins by Real Foods.  She likes the sesame ones.  Sometimes we spread a little Adam's Peanut Butter on them or a little cream cheese.  She also likes Pirate's Booty for a snack.

Allowed Veggies:  bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, bell pepper, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherry tomatoes, corn, cucumber, eggplant, kale (cooked), lettuce, mushrooms, peas, radishes, spinach, water chestnuts.

Allowed Fruits:  avocado (1/8 medium), ripe banana (1/4 medium), blackberries, blueberries, cranberries, grapefruit, lemon or lime, orange (1/2 small), raspberries, rhubarb, strawberries, tangelo.

Tootsie will not touch most fruits.  She is repulsed by the smell of raspberries (weird!).  She does enjoy 1/2 of a small orange and 1/4 of a ripe banana each day.

Allowed Additives:  beet sugar, cane sugar, confectioner's sugar, corn syrup (not high-fructose), dehydrated sugar cane juice, dextrose, erythritol, glucose, granulated sugar, guar gum (minor ingredient), maltodextrin (minor ingredient), mustard (unsweetened), raw sugar, saccharine, soy sauce, stevia, sucrose, tabasco sauce, vinegar (white rice, distilled), wheat starch, whey protein isolate.

**Update 8/8/11**
"The VERY latest food composition data available, as of 2/2011, show that brown rice has a "trace" of fructans and white rice has "none detectable." Long story short, they are both very acceptable on the elimination phase of a FODMAPs-restricted diet. If a person has an adverse reaction to brown rice, it is very unlike due to FODMAPs."  -Patsy Catsos

My FructMal Girl...and Celiac Boy?

Well, this is all starting to starting to sink in... We saw Dr. L on the 3rd of June for a follow-up with Tootsie and to have Buddy seen for his increasing discomfort and array of symptoms.  These are the symptoms he presented with: Bloating Constipation Reflux Sharp abdominal pain Lactose intolerance  Large volume stools...large diameter Leg bruising Joint Pain Muscle Pain Feeling like he was going to vomit at bedtime Irritability/moodiness...Buddy said he felt like he had a bad temper. Dr. L listened carefully to everything we said and decided to start with an endoscopy.  I could see the wheels turning as he was listening to us and felt like he was leaning toward celiac disease, but couldn't believe our boy could have it.  Just 5 days later, on June 13th, Buddy had the scope done and while he was under they did blood work as well.  He was very nervous about the whole thing, but put on a brave face and did very well!  After it was all done he said, "That was
